The national anthem boomed through the fans, creating an intense mood inside the crowded arena in Florida. There were occasional shouts and fervent chanting, and there was definitely an electric vibe.
During the national anthem, Boston’s unwavering goalie, Jeremy Swayman, looked out confidently at the boisterous crowd, almost as if he anticipated his team’s victory.
He did, in fact, deliver.
In the opening game of their second-round playoff series against the Panthers, the Bruins prevailed 5-1 thanks to a goal from Brandon Carlo shortly after he became a parent, while Swayman’s outstanding playoffs play continued.
“Our team demonstrated incredible resiliency,” said Swayman. “From the physicality to the mental toughness, it was inspiring to witness, and I’m eager for what lies ahead.”
With a 5-0 record and no losses to the Panthers this season, Boston’s attack was strengthened by contributions from Mason Lohrei, Justin Brazeau, Jake DeBrusk, and Morgan Geekie. With three goals in the last 7:08 of the second period, the Bruins overcame an early 1-0 disadvantage and took command of the game. Pavel Zacha contributed two assists to the cause.
With an immaculate record, Swayman’s superb goaltending has been a key factor in each of Boston’s five playoff triumphs to date. He denied Florida’s seven power play opportunities, reaffirming his position as the postseason’s best goalie.
Coach Jim Montgomery of the Bruins acknowledged, “We had our moments.” “But Jeremy Swayman’s performance was instrumental in securing the win.”
Matthew Tkachuk of Florida gave the Panthers an early lead, but they were unable to hold onto it as Boston applied constant pressure. Florida’s Sergei Bobrovsky made 24 saves, but the Panthers’ offense was unable to take advantage on its opportunities.
“Our performance fell short of our expectations,” Panthers coach Paul Maurice bemoaned. “But there’s room for improvement, and we’ll make the necessary adjustments.”
The triumph signified a change from the hotly contested regular-season encounters between the two clubs. Boston showed defensive tenacity after taking the lead, thwarting Florida’s offensive attempts.
Geekie and Lohrei’s rapid equalizers after Tkachuk’s goal ignited Boston’s offense, demonstrating Swayman’s resolute nature. Carlo, a defenseman who returned to the squad after giving birth to his kid, had a great day highlighted by his timely goal only 21 seconds before the second period ended.
It was my sincere desire to play tonight, Carlo said. “And I’m thrilled I did.”
DeBrusk’s empty-net goal and Brazeau’s game-winning goal highlighted the Bruins’ supremacy on both ends of the rink.
Both teams are prepared to make adjustments as Game 2 approaches, paving the way for another thrilling matchup in Sunrise on Wednesday night.
