Mariah Carey is mourning the loss of her mother and sister, who she revealed both passed away on the same day.
“My heart is shattered by the loss of my mother this past weekend. Tragically, my sister also passed away on the same day,” Mariah Carey shared in a statement to CNN on Monday.
The singer did not disclose the causes of death for Patricia Carey, who was reportedly 87, and Alison Carey, who was 63 and lived in Coxsackie, New York, according to a Times Union article.
The “All I Want for Christmas” star expressed gratitude for having spent the last week with her mother before her passing. “I am thankful for the love, support, and respect for my privacy during this incredibly difficult time,” she added.
Patricia Carey, a Juilliard-trained opera singer and vocal coach, was married to Mariah Carey’s father, Alfred Roy, until their separation when Mariah was three. Alfred Roy passed away in 2002.
In her 2020 memoir, “The Meaning of Mariah Carey,” the singer discussed her “complicated” relationship with her mother, acknowledging the contradictions and challenges they faced.
Despite their strained relationship, Mariah dedicated the book to her mother, writing, “And to Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I do believe actually did the best she could. I will love you the best I can, always.”
Mariah Carey was reportedly estranged from her sister, Alison Carey, who sued her in 2021 for emotional distress caused by some of the memoir’s content.
Alison claimed the book was used to “humiliate and embarrass” her, though Mariah did not respond legally to the lawsuit, according to online court records.
Mariah Carey is one of three children. Patricia Carey was also the mother of Morgan Carey, Mariah’s brother.
