Labor Day falls on Monday, September 2, marking the unofficial close of summer 2024.
With students returning to school, many Americans take advantage of this final long weekend to host summer barbecues or take a beach getaway.
Observed on the first Monday in September, this holiday honors the American labor movement and the significant contributions workers have made to the nation’s economy.
That doesn’t mean Americans won’t have errands to tackle, whether it’s a trip to the bank or grabbing a last-minute item at the grocery store.
Here’s a guide to what will be open and closed on Labor Day 2024.
Retail Stores
Shoppers in need of running errands will generally find most stores open. Most locations under the Kroger umbrella—including Kroger, Ralphs, Dillons, Smith’s, King Soopers, Fry’s, QFC, City Market, Owen’s, Jay C, Pay Less, Baker’s, Gerbes, Harris Teeter, Pick ‘n Save, Metro Market, Mariano’s, Fred Meyer, and Food 4 Less—will operate during their regular hours.
Major retailers like Walmart (WMT) and Target will maintain their usual operating hours.
Most CVS (CVS) Pharmacy locations will be open, though some may have adjusted hours. Walgreens will be open as usual on Labor Day, but most pharmacies will be closed, with the exception of 24-hour locations and a few select pharmacies.
In contrast, wholesale retailer Costco (COST) will be closed.
Post Office
Mail services through the United States Postal Service will be unavailable on Monday, as post offices will be closed. UPS will not be operating except for Express Critical services, and only a few locations will be open.
FedEx Custom Critical, the premium service for urgent shipments, will be available, while FedEx Office will have modified hours.
Banks
Since Labor Day is one of the 11 federal banking holidays, banks will be closed. However, ATMs and online banking will still be accessible.
The US stock market will be closed, with both NASDAQ and the New York Stock Exchange suspending trading.
Government
Federal offices and government buildings, including the DMV and local libraries, will be closed. State and local courts will also be non-operational.
