As the 2024 Paris Paralympics captivate global sports fans, Google celebrated the wheelchair tennis competition on Tuesday with a lively doodle featuring animated birds.
The doodle depicts two birds playing wheelchair tennis in the beautiful Parisian setting of Jardin du Palais Royal, or Jardin des Tuileries.
“Ace attitudes and stellar serves. Wheelchair Tennis starts today at Stade Roland-Garros!” the search engine announced on its official Google Doodles page.
The wheelchair tennis events at the 2024 Summer Paralympics in Paris began on August 30 and will conclude on September 7 at the iconic Roland Garros Stadium, renowned for its clay courts. The tournament includes singles and doubles matches in the men’s, women’s, and quads categories.
On Sunday, Alfie Hewett (Great Britain), Martin De La Puente (Spain), Todiko Oda (Japan), and Gustavo Fernandez (Argentina) secured their spots in the last 16 after competing in matches with varying dynamics.
First introduced at the 1992 Barcelona Paralympic Games, wheelchair tennis is now featured in all four Grand Slam tournaments.
The official website says the International Tennis Federation Wheelchair Tennis Tour encompasses over 150 events.
The sport is divided into two categories:
- The open class, for athletes with permanent impairments in one or both legs but with full arm function.
- The quad class, for athletes who have additional limitations in their playing arm, affecting their ability to hold the racquet and maneuver the wheelchair.
